Offered through the Creative Arts Workshop
Saturday 10:00am -12:30pm
Buckle up for a socially distant (and warm) way of drawing winter landscapes from the comfort of your car. Grab your mask and step out of your car for an in-person demonstration by the instructor as he guides you through the basic steps of choosing a subject and starting a landscape drawing. Students will then either start their own drawings from the warmth of their cars or, for the warmly dressed, in the fresh and frosty air at their field easel. Basic pencil landscape drawing techniques will be taught, and socially distanced one-on-one coaching will be given. Masks are required for the demonstration and critiques. Workshop will meet in the parking lot of the Wilbur Cross High School at the foot of the cliffs of East Rock Park.

Offered at the New York School of the Arts
Saturday 2pm – 5pm, Sunday 10am – 1pm
Learn the basic perspective and structural drawing skills you need to render an interior scene with furniture and still life objects. Students can work entirely in charcoal for the duration of the workshop or try developing their drawing in pastel on the second day. An introduction to color observation and color mixing with pastels will be included.
The class will be taught through demonstration, short lectures and individual coaching.
Note that additional safety protocols will be in place for this class.

I am taking a sabbatical this summer from teaching to focus on a new commission. I look forward to my classes in the fall-either online or in the studio! Thank you to all the folks who joined me in my Zoom classes in quarantine.
In the fall I’ll be teaching “Fundamentals of Drawing” at the Art Students League, “Perspective Drawing” at the 92nd Street Y, and a new class “Interiors: Still Life, Perspective and the Figure in Charcoal and Pastel” at the New York School of the Arts.
To keep up-to-date about dates, times, online/studio status of these classes and for registration info, sign up for my Mailing List and I’ll send out an email with all the info when I have it.
I look forward to seeing everyone in the fall!
This Thursday, May 7, 1-2 pm
Join me on a live interactive Zoom tour of my studio in Erector Square in New Haven. Get a sneak peek at a new group of paintings I am working on and see the paintings in different stages from initial sketch to completion. I will discuss my artistic goals with this new body of work and my conceptual and technical struggles. Learn about the process and tools I use to put together a painting of a big group of figures using only my imagination and a couple models—including structural drawing, photography and maquettes.
